“You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.” ~ R. Buckminster Fuller

“There are no problems; only Solutions.”–John Lennon
I grew up in New Jersey. There are many ways one could describe the Garden State. George Carlin called it “The Garden State, not unless you’re growing smoke stacks! But to me, New Jersey will always be my home. To some, it’s Sopranoland. Or Jersey Shore. To many, we are defined by the exits we take. I exited New Jersey a dozen years ago.
This melting pot of a State is quite unique. No matter what joke emerges, it is divided by its two main transportation highways, The New Jersey Turnpike and the Garden State Parkway.
I recall my journeys down the Pike every April and May, as we the road construction crews were starting their summertime preparation work. Every year, around the same time of the year, like clockwork, the crews would close down one or two lanes of the highway as they prepared to fill in potholes created during the Winter months, or repaint the same sections.

For many years, I wondered: “Why do they continue to fill in the same potholes year after year? Why not create a better road!” It was years later, when I looked at the Economic system that I discovered the root of the problem. They weren’t really interested in creating a road that was built well, their jobs were to keep their jobs. And in order to keep their jobs, they had to create roads that kept people employed and not just roads that helped people get from point A to point B.
And therein lies a key problem. If our economic models are at the root of most of societies sickness, then how do we create an economic model that serves both the people and the planet?
What would it look like?
If we were to create societies that actually worked in balance with the natural world—let’s call them Sustainable Societies that worked, what systems and services would be put into place? How would they work? What principles would enable them to maintain sincerity and continue long after they were created?

Can we understand that our problems are all solvable, and that maybe, just maybe they have been right in front of our eyes the whole time?
And that’s why we are here. To unite people into a state of conscious creativity. Knowing that in every city, in every town, in every community, there are people in labs, in dorm rooms, in garages looking for the solutions that serve us all…….. and to start the dialogues that we need to have right now…and to then find the ways to bring them to life.
It is time for the passionate to come out to play.
“Nature is a totally efficient, self-regenerating system. IF we discover the laws that govern this system and live synergistically within them, sustainability will follow and humankind will be a success.” ~ R. Buckminster Fuller
