Pivotal organizer for Black voting rights in America

A pivotal talk by Dr. Merline Pitre on Lulu Belle Madison White

Dr. Merline Pitre delivered this talk in 1990 at the first annual conference on African American History in Texas. She covers the political development, style and achievements of Lulu Belle Madison White, one of the strategists behind the Supreme Court case Smith v Allwright that stopped the use of whites-only political primaries. White was also a major recruiter, organizer, and outspoken champion of the NAACP and of the use of Black voting power to serve the community’s needs.
