PAID TO DREAM Tom Kenny

“I’m lucky enough do the job I always wanted to have as a kid. Mel Blanc was my idol.” In one of my favorite interviews, Tom Kenny, the voice of SPONGE BOB SQUARE PANTS, proves to be a true exemplar of PAID TO DREAM. Enjoy the delightful and effervescent Mr. Kenny.

PAID TO DREAM: Earl Pomerantz

In addition to winning two Emmy Awards and the Cable Ace Award, my dear friend Earl Pomerantz won the prestigious Humanitas Prize for an episode of THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW called “Ted’s Change of Heart”.
Earl (who also wrote for CHEERS, THE COSBY SHOW, TAXI, and created MAJOR DAD) wrote a line about dying in which he said “You never know when God’s going to swat you with a newspaper.” God swatted Earl recently at the age of 75. In addition to being a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Earl was a baseball fanatic. He would disappear to Arizona every winter and watch his favorite team get ready for the new season. So I like to think that Earl didn’t pass away on March 7th. He’s just away at spring training.

PAID TO DREAM Martha Henry

I’m so excited! I’m off to Toronto in two weeks to see Martha Henry (pictured here with me and Ken Welsh in Stratford, Ontario) perform on stage in MARJORIE PRIME. Martha and I have been friends for over half a century. This theatrical legend has been associated with the Stratford Festival since graduating from Canada’s National Theatre School. In addition she has performed on Broadway and in London’s West End. She has also won numerous Genie and Gemini awards for her work on the big screen and television. I adore this woman!

PAID TO DREAM PATTY McCormack

When I was a little boy, I had a terrible crush on the pig-tailed, blond girl who played Cousin Ingeborg on the CBS TV series MAMA. Every Friday night I watched the show hoping to see Ingeborg. I never knew the actress’s name. Years later Patty McCormack and I became friends. We’d swap kid actor stories and she told me how exhausted she was on Friday evening leaving the TV studio to play Rhoda on Broadway in THE BAD SEED. I asked her what the TV show was and she told me MAMA. I had chills. “Did you play Ingeborg?” I asked. She nodded.Years later when I married my Swedish wife, Patty smiled and said: ”You finally found Ingeborg.”
