PAID TO DREAM Alex Karras

Published

Irreverent and irrepressible are the two adjectives that leap to mind when I think of Alex Karras.  He went into the family business – football – playing for the Detroit Lions. He played himself in the movie PAPER LION opposite Alan Alda’s George Plimpton.  A successful career as an actor and producer came out of that  experience, often co-starring with his wife and producing partner. Susan Clark. My favorite performance of Alex’s was Squash Bernstein, Robert Preston’s lover in VICTOR VICTORIA. He loved to laugh and he loved to cook. Alex taught me to make spaghetti for a crowd. When he died at 77, one of his many illnesses listed was dementia. But he was in good form the previous year when he shared his memories with me.
